sure you can. i did this years ago. cut off a section about 18 inches long, strip off about 6-8 inches of leaves from the bottom. i stuck it in a soda bottle with plain water from the faucet. in a few weeks roots were growing and i just dug a little hole and stuck it in the ground. its now over 30 feet tall and growing. however, these are not the best trees if you live in the south. also, they needs humongous amount of water. if you have a spot on your property that accumulates water or is always wet, that would be a good place to plant. i have also heard that the roots will find their way into sewer lines, but have no first hand knowledge of that. anyway, just try it, what do you have to lose?

Just put it in a wet place, it should root in warm weather.

Willow trees of any kind are the easiest to root of almost any plant. You can stick them in water and they will root, or even in a pot of soil, that is kept moist, they will root in 4-6 wks. (water in which willow cuttings have been is also great as a rooting hormone to start other plants).
