Who removed the penis portion of the statues and/or why did they do it?
Karen, women wouldn’t have removed them for dildos since they would have been completely impractical with jagged edges.

It just seems like all those statues were vandalized by someone, and I wish I knew who did it and why.

really, i’m surprized! here in the east where most of the people r hypocrites about sex, ironically, there r statues of nude gods and goddesses in temples.
There one famous statue of Lord Shiva in Kathmandu called “Unmatta Bhairav”(Aroused God) on whose erect penis women put their head for his blessing. And in Tantrik method these things are not considered obscene.
Welcome to Kathmandu, if u really wanna c some most potent Gods and sensual goddesses.
But, beware, sex work(prostitution) is an offence according to Nepal Law.

Think of how old they are, and think of how that part sticks out and how little of it is attached to the rest of the statue. Its just a delicate part that could not survive all those years.

My understanding is many statues were damaged as the result of warfare. A male warrior takes over some region and destroys images of a rival…usally the face or groin. It’s a graphic way of saying I rule now an have taken from you any means of continuing your people.

Most were damaged by periodic censorship fads. People so freaked out by a penis they had to remove it. For awhile it was even standard to put plaster loin cloths on the nudes.
Ultra-conservative, religious nuts periodically run amok and it takes awhile afterwords for people to get back to normal. An extreme example would be the Taliban destroying statues of Buddha in Afghanistan.
